The most common misconception about becoming a paid caregiver

A lot of family members rule themselves out as potential CDPAP caregivers because they assume the role requires certification, like a home health aide or CNA credential. It doesn't. CDPAP was specifically designed so that family members without formal medical training could be hired and paid to provide care.

What's actually required instead

• Meeting the program's basic eligibility rules for caregivers — age, relationship, and legal status requirements
• Completing any program-required orientation, which covers documentation and safety basics rather than clinical training
• Passing a background check, where required by the state
• Being willing and able to perform the tasks listed on the specific care plan — no more, no less

What happens if a task needs more skill

Some care plans do include tasks that typically require training, like wound care or tube feeding. In those cases, the caregiver receives task-specific instruction, often from a visiting nurse, before that task is added to what they're authorized to do — it's targeted training for a specific need, not a broad medical certification.

We've had caregivers come to us certain they weren't qualified, purely because they didn't have a healthcare background. In almost every case, what the care plan actually asked for was exactly what they were already doing for their family member.

Why this design choice matters

The program's premise is that the person who already knows someone's routines, preferences, and needs — usually a family member — is often better positioned to provide consistent care than a rotating cast of unfamiliar aides, even without a clinical background.
